Dear SJJ Families:

I want to remind you of an exciting opportunity for our school. The State of Ohio has an initiative that will benefit our school and its students through a Tax Credit Scholarship Program, whereby individuals may receive a 100% tax credit against their Ohio income tax liability for gifts up to $750; or for married couples filing jointly, $1,500. You can find out more at www.sjjschool.org/angel. What a wonderful opportunity to support our students at no net cost to donors!

Students from every Catholic school in the Diocese of Cleveland, including those attending Sts. Joseph and John, will be eligible to receive a scholarship from the Angel Scholarship Fund. This fund is being managed locally by the Catholic Community Foundation and they are accepting contributions that can be designated specifically for scholarships for students at our school. At last check, just about $10,000 is earmarked for our school!

More good news: this program does not affect any student’s ability to receive other scholarships or tuition assistance. It is important to keep in mind that contributions to the Angel Scholarship Fund will only be awarded to students who apply, and that all students are eligible, with priority given to applicants below 300% of the poverty level (currently $79,500 for a family of four).

If this interests you, I encourage you and your families to participate in this program – your support will be a great service to our students and will help bolster our efforts to ensure the viability of our school. I plan to add my personal support this weekend.

Jim Gero, father of four Cleveland Catholic Education graduates and Senior Partner for Hobe & Lucas CPA, was excited for this opportunity.

Instead of this money going to the state, I can contribute it to the scholarship fund, help build up Catholic education in the diocese, and even direct it to a specific elementary or high school…the key thing is, it doesn’t cost us anything. I thought it was too good to be true. I found the website and donated right away – I think I was the first to sign on.

Just follow these 3 easy steps:

1. If desired, review your tax liability from last year (2021 1040 IT, line 8c) to help estimate the amount of your tax liability for this year against which the credit can be taken (keep in mind the maximum credit amount is currently $750; or for married couples filing jointly $1,500, which means your tax liability must be $750 or $1,500 to take the full credit).

2. Make a contribution to the Angel Scholarship Fund before the end of this calendar year at www.catholiccommunity.org/angel, or by calling 216-902-1312.

3. Claim your tax credit on your 2023 Ohio tax form with the tax credit receipt that will be mailed to you from the Catholic Community Foundation.

Thank you for your consideration and all you do in support of our Viking community,
