Angel Scholarship Fund

Beginning in 2022, the State of Ohio offered a new initiative that can directly benefit our school and its students through a Tax Credit Scholarship Program, whereby individuals may receive a 100% tax credit against their Ohio income tax liability for gifts up to $750 or $1,500 as a married couple. What a wonderful opportunity to support our students at no net cost to you as a donor!

Last year, nearly $40,000 of Ohio income tax credit was directed towards Saints Joseph and John School. This money went to assisting our families to find Catholic Education more affordable for their children. We believe that Saints Joseph and John School strives to provide an environment where one encounters Jesus, the first step to becoming a missionary disciple – a person who reaches out in service to God and one another – ultimately leading the student to a closer relationship with Christ. We are grateful for those who supported this last year!

Those who donated before should have received an email or letter inviting your support again this year. The State of Ohio is offering this opportunity again this year. We invite others to consider this opportunity before 2023 comes to an end. You are likely eligible to direct up to $750 (or $1,500 for a married couple filing jointly) of Ohio income tax credit to Saints Joseph and John School! We would welcome everyone’s support!

In conjunction with this program, students from every Catholic school in the Diocese of Cleveland, including those attending Saints Joseph and John, will be eligible to receive a scholarship from the newly-formed Angel Scholarship Fund. This fund is being managed locally by the Catholic Community Foundation, and they are accepting contributions that can be designated specifically for scholarships for students at our school. Any undesignated contributions will be awarded as scholarships across a diocesan-wide pool of applicants from any Catholic school by prioritizing low-income status and need – comparable to the current diocesan tuition assistance program.

Participation in this program does not affect any student’s ability to receive other scholarships or tuition assistance. It is important to keep in mind that contributions to the Angel Scholarship Fund will only be awarded to students who apply, and that all students are eligible, with priority given to applicants below 300% of the poverty level (currently $79,500 for a family of four).

Jim Gero, father of four Cleveland Catholic Education graduates and Senior Partner for Hobe & Lucas CPA, was excited for this opportunity.

Instead of this money going to the state, I can contribute it to the scholarship fund, help build up Catholic education in the diocese, and even direct it to a specific elementary or high school…the key thing is, it doesn’t cost us anything. I thought it was too good to be true. I found the website and donated right away – I think I was the first to sign on.

To donate, follow these 3 easy steps:

  1. If desired, review your tax liability from last year (2022 1040 IT, line 8c) to help estimate the amount of your tax liability for this year against which the credit can be taken (keep in mind the maximum credit amount is currently $750, which means your tax liability must be $750 to take the full credit).
  2. Make a contribution to the Angel Scholarship Fund in 2023 at www.catholiccommunity.org/angel, or by calling 216-902-1312.
  3. Claim your tax credit on your 2023 Ohio tax form with the tax credit receipt that will be mailed to you from the Catholic Community Foundation.

Thank you for your consideration and all you do in support of our Viking community.
