Viking Cove: Before & After-School Care

Saints Joseph and John School offers a safe, teacher-operated before- and after-school care program for K-8 students enrolled in our school: Viking Cove and Mornings at Cove.

Viking Cove before-school care is available to all students in grades K-8 from 6:30 AM and 7:15 AM.

-Reservations for Mornings at the Cove must be made at least one day before using the program via REMIND app.

-Students will receive a light breakfast and be taken to McGraw Hall at 7:15 AM

There is a flat rate of $10 for Mornings at the Cove.

Viking Cove is available for students in grades K-8 from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm. Students will enjoy an after-school snack, participate in supervised homework time and then explore a variety of activities directed by Saints Joseph and John teachers and aides.

Vikings Cove begins on the first day of school and is offered everyday classes are in session except the last day before Christmas break, any other scheduled early release days, and the last day of school.

COST: The cost for aftercare will be $5 per hour per student. Charges are billed in 60-minute increments regardless of the amount of time the student is in aftercare for that hour.

Students are checked out of Cove at the time of pick-up, not when a REMIND notification is sent.

A LATE FEE OF $1.00 PER MINUTE IS CHARGED BEGINNING AT 6:00 P.M.

A Viking Cove Remind account has been set up so parents can communicate with the director. Parents can correspond with this app if there are changes to pick-up or any concerns. Parents will pick children up at Door E. Enrolled parents will notify the Cove 10 minutes before arrival via REMIND so the child can be escorted to the door by a staff member. Parents and caregivers need not enter the building upon arrival.

Only students attending Saints Joseph John School may be enrolled in our extended day programs. Utilizing our extended day programs is a privilege, not a right. Students must comply with the rules and procedures established for the program as well as the behavior code of  Saints Joseph and John School in order to remain eligible to use extended day programs.
Viking Cove is part of the school program at Saints Joseph and John School. Therefore, the principal is responsible for the extended day program. The director of the program is responsible for the day-to-day leadership and organization of the program. She reports to the principal as needed. Concerns about the program should be brought to the attention of our program director, Ms. Puliafico. Concerns should be brought to the attention of the principal only after first discussing them with the director.

School policies and procedures are followed in the extended day program. The consequences for inappropriate behavior during the extended day program include but are not limited to time outs, time in the principal’s office, suspension from the program, and mandated withdrawal from the program. Children, whose behavior after several warnings and contact with parents, indicates that they are not benefiting from the program will be asked to withdraw. 

EMERGENCY COMMUNICATION

Parents will be contacted through REMIND or a phone call in case of an emergency. The extended-day staff uses the information provided on the school emergency form. It is the responsibility of parents to update any information with the extended day staff as well as the school staff.

The director of the extended day program is the first to receive school closing information from the principal of the school.

SNACK

Healthy snacks and a drink are provided daily. Occasionally, a special snack is provided. Parents must communicate with the staff of the extended day program IN WRITING if there are any dietary restrictions. If a child has food allergies, we ask that parents provide a snack for their child.

All cookies served come from nutfree factories.

RECORDS

The director of the extended day program keeps a formal record of attendance and payment of fees. Extended-day records are confidential and will be shared only with those who have a legal right to know. The pastor and principal have access to all extended-day records and logs. 

The director of the extended day program must be provided with custody decrees or other documents relating to parent contact with a child if both parents do not have custody of the child.

RIGHT TO AMEND

The program reserves the right to amend the handbook for just cause. Parents will be notified promptly in writing if changes are made.

Other items in bags can be coloring or puzzle books, flashcards, sketchbooks, and a pencil pouch with crayons, pencils, colored pencils, and markers.   No scissors, please. 

2:00 – 2:15  CheckIn: *Kindergarteners are taken to Viking Cove by a teacher or aide.

2:30 – 3:45  Student Rotations:

    • Kindergarten – While Kindergarten students do not complete homework during quiet time they will engage in quiet activities such as coloring, reading stories, or watching movies.
    • Grades 1 – 8 – During homework time all students are required to work on homework, IXL, or silent reading.  Viking Cove is staffed by teachers who are available to help students during homework time.
    • *We ask that students have a pencil or pen in their backpack for homework and a book to read if they have no homework and others are still working.

    • Snacks are provided daily. Students are not permitted to bring their own snacks unless your child has an allergy. Please send a note with your child if they have an allergy.  All cookies come from nutfree factories

3:45 – 4:00 Bathroom break and washing hands

4:00 – 6:00 Free play, STEM activity, and craft time. This includes outside play, movies, games, large group games, coloring, crafts, or toys.
